Located in Traverse City's 1903 Carnegie Library building in Lay Park, the Heritage Center houses several different historical and cultural collections in newly-refurbished galleries. Visitors can see Native American artifacts from several periods as well as exhibits about railroads, the Northern Michigan Asylum, a blacksmith shop, one-room schools and a Victorian parlor. Admission: $3 for adults, $1.50 for students, age 5 and under are free. Hours: Tuesday-Friday noon - 4 p.m. During June through December only, the museum also is open on Saturdays 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Historial Society's research archives are open to the public Monday through Thursday 1-4 p.m. all year.
